Description
Why Do Wash Basins & Kitchen Sinks Choke in Singapore?
A choked wash basin or kitchen sink usually happens when debris, grease or other materials gradually build up inside the waste pipe and restrict water flow. Common causes include:
- Hair and soap residue – A common cause of wash basin blockages. Hair can combine with soap and dirt to form a stubborn buildup.
- Grease and cooking oil – Kitchen sinks can become choked when oil, fat and grease stick to the inside of drainage pipes and trap food particles.
- Food scraps – Rice, noodles, vegetable pieces, coffee grounds and other food waste can accumulate inside kitchen sink pipes.
- Dirt and sludge – Everyday washing can introduce dirt and residue into the drainage system, gradually reducing water flow.
- Foreign objects – Small items, plastic packaging or other debris can accidentally enter the sink and cause a blockage.
- Soap and detergent buildup – Over time, soap scum and detergent residue can combine with other debris inside the pipe.
- Poorly maintained bottle traps / waste traps – The trap underneath a basin or sink can collect debris and eventually become restricted.
- Renovation debris – Cement, grout, sand and other construction materials entering the drainage system can cause serious blockages.
- Blocked drainage pipes further down – If cleaning the sink trap does not solve the problem, the obstruction may be further along the waste pipe.
- Old or poorly flowing pipework – Older drainage systems may have accumulated deposits over many years, reducing the internal pipe opening.
Signs Your Sink or Wash Basin May Be Choked
Look out for slow drainage, water pooling in the basin, unpleasant drain smells, bubbling or gurgling sounds, or water backing up when the sink is used.
Regularly removing hair and debris from wash basin traps and avoiding pouring cooking oil, grease and food waste down kitchen sinks can help reduce the risk of blockages.
