Description
Why Do Water Inlet Pipes or Connectors Leak?
Water inlet pipes and connectors supply water to fixtures such as toilet bowls, basin taps, kitchen taps, washing machines and other plumbing fittings. Over time, the pipe, connector or sealing components can wear out and start leaking.
Common causes include:
- Worn rubber washers or seals – Seals can become hard, cracked or compressed over time, allowing water to escape from the connection.
- Loose connectors – Connections may loosen gradually due to movement, vibration or repeated use.
- Over-tightening – Excessive tightening can damage the washer, threads or connector and eventually cause leakage.
- Old or deteriorated inlet hoses – Flexible hoses can become brittle, cracked or swollen after years of use.
- Corrosion and rust – Metal connectors and fittings can corrode, especially after prolonged exposure to moisture.
- Damaged threads – Cross-threading or damaged threads can prevent the connector from forming a proper watertight seal.
- Poor installation – Incorrectly fitted hoses, connectors or washers can result in leaks from the beginning or premature failure.
- Bent or twisted hoses – Excessive bending or twisting puts stress on the hose and its connection points.
- High water pressure – Higher-than-normal water pressure can place additional stress on hoses, valves and connectors.
- Age and repeated temperature changes – Regular exposure to water and temperature changes can gradually deteriorate seals and flexible components.
- Damaged fittings or valves – A faulty angle valve, stop valve or appliance inlet connection can also be the source of the leak.
Signs of an Inlet Pipe Leak
Look out for dripping around the connector, dampness on the wall or floor, water pooling underneath a sink or toilet, rust around the fitting, or a hose that appears cracked or swollen.
If a connector is leaking, simply tightening it may not always solve the problem. The washer, hose, connector or inlet valve may need to be replaced depending on the actual cause.
