Description
Common Reasons Why Toilet Bowls Leak or Flush Poorly in Singapore
Toilet problems can come from the base of the toilet bowl, cistern/tank, water inlet, or flushing mechanism. Common causes include:
💧 Leak From Underneath the Toilet Bowl
- Worn or damaged toilet pan seal – The seal between the toilet bowl and the drainage outlet can deteriorate, allowing water to escape from the base during flushing.
- Loose or damaged fixing – Movement of the toilet bowl can affect the seal and cause leakage.
- Cracked toilet bowl or base – Cracks caused by impact, age or stress can result in water leaking onto the floor.
- Poor previous installation – An incorrectly fitted toilet bowl or poorly sealed connection may eventually develop leaks.
- Blocked drainage – A partially blocked outlet can cause water to back up and escape around the base.
🚰 Leak From the Cistern / Tank
- Worn flush valve seal – A deteriorated rubber seal can allow water to continuously leak from the tank into the toilet bowl.
- Faulty inlet/fill valve – A faulty valve may fail to shut off completely, causing the cistern to keep filling.
- Cracked cistern – Older or damaged cisterns can develop cracks and leak externally.
- Loose connections – Connections between the cistern, toilet bowl, inlet hose and other fittings can become loose or develop worn seals.
- Worn rubber washers – Rubber components can deteriorate over time and cause small but persistent leaks.
🚽 Weak or Incomplete Flushing
- Low water level in the cistern – Insufficient water in the tank can result in a weak flush.
- Faulty flush mechanism – A worn or damaged flush valve may not release enough water.
- Blocked or restricted toilet trap – Accumulated waste, tissue or foreign objects can restrict the passage and weaken flushing.
- Partially blocked drainage pipe – The toilet may flush slowly or incompletely if the downstream drainage is restricted.
- Mineral or dirt buildup – Deposits around the flushing mechanism or water passages can affect performance.
- Faulty inlet valve – Slow filling means the cistern may not have enough water available for the next flush.
🔄 Toilet Keeps Running or Flushing Constantly
If the toilet continues running after flushing, common causes include:
- Worn or damaged flush valve seal
- Faulty flush valve
- Float or fill valve not shutting off properly
- Incorrect water level adjustment
- Sticking or damaged flush button/mechanism
- Worn internal rubber components
- Water continuously leaking from the cistern into the bowl
When Should You Get It Checked?
A small toilet leak can gradually waste water and potentially damage the surrounding floor or fittings. If you notice water around the base, a constantly running toilet, weak flushing, slow cistern filling or water leaking from the tank/hose, it is worth having the toilet inspected.
The appropriate repair depends on the source of the problem. In some cases, replacing a seal, valve, hose or internal flush component is sufficient; in other cases, the toilet bowl or cistern may require replacement.
