Description
Why Does a Toilet Bowl Choke in Singapore?
A choked toilet bowl is a common plumbing problem that can happen when waste or foreign materials restrict the toilet trap or drainage pipe. Common causes include:
- Excessive toilet paper – Large amounts of tissue flushed at once can accumulate and restrict water flow.
- Wet wipes and sanitary products – Wet wipes, diapers, sanitary pads and other non-flushable products can easily cause blockages.
- Foreign objects – Items such as plastic packaging, bottles, toys or other objects can accidentally fall into the toilet.
- Insufficient flushing – Low water volume or repeated incomplete flushes may allow waste and paper to accumulate.
- Waste buildup – Over time, deposits can build up inside the toilet trap or connected drainage pipe, reducing the passage available for water and waste.
- Hard-water/mineral deposits – Mineral deposits can gradually narrow passages, particularly in older toilet fittings.
- Renovation debris – Cement, grout, sand and other construction materials entering the toilet can cause serious blockages. These materials should never be flushed down the toilet.
- Blocked drainage pipe – Sometimes the toilet itself is not the problem. A blockage further down the drainage pipe can cause the toilet to flush slowly, bubble or back up.
- Tree roots or damaged underground pipes – For certain properties, particularly landed homes, external drainage pipe problems can also affect toilet drainage.
Signs of a Choked Toilet
Watch out for slow flushing, water rising in the bowl, bubbling or gurgling sounds, repeated partial blockages, or wastewater backing up.
If plunging does not clear the problem or the blockage keeps returning, professional choke clearing may be required. Depending on the location and severity of the blockage, manual or machine-assisted clearing can be used.
